Sony's E3 2010 Overview

by Logan

June 15, 2010

Honestly, I'm sitting here thinking how I can write more than a paragraph about this debacle. There was so much time wasted with cheap montages, terrible advertising, and lame jokes that they hardly showed any games. By the time they actually showed games, it was nothing more than a few trailers. Regardless, I'll do my best.

 Killzone 3

Killzone 3

First out of the gate for Sony was Killzone 3 and it was exactly what you'd expect. There wasn't much substance or style to it, just the generic shooting we're so accustomed to nowadays. The jetpack sequence was rather cool, but the entire demo itself was pretty boring. I for one would be completely content with never seeing another shooter again.

 Little Big Planet 2

Mario Sports Mix

The first LBP was a pretty disjunct game. It worked well in its core features, but the ability to use those in any meaningful applications was flawed. Well LBP2 is looking to rectify that and it certainly looks bigger and better. It actually looks like a do-it-yourself Mario Party with all kinds of chances to make your own minigames in whatever way you see fit. This will be interesting to see what people can come up with when the game arrives in about a year.

 Medal of Honor

Medal of Honor

Honestly, I'm not going to say anything about this game. It's Modern Warfare 2. That's all it is. It's fucking sickening. I give this a P for plagiarism.

 Gran Turismo 5

Gran Turismo 5

They showed a short trailer for this game and finally gave the damn thing a release date. November 2, 2011. Why it takes 7 years of development to make a racing game is beyond me. I mean it looks fine, but it just seems like too little too late.

 Portal 2

Portal 2

Here was a game that we thought had fallen off the face of the earth for this E3 after it was announced that it wasn't showing up until 2011. Even a bigger shocker was the fact that it was actually going to be appearing on the PS3, especially given Gabe Newell's disdain towards the platform. Still though, it was announced that Portal 2 would be on PS3 and that it would feature Steam functionality. This was exciting until you saw the trailer, which was nothing but prerendered disappointment. Seriously, they must not have ANYTHING tangible to show about this game.

 Twisted Metal

Twisted Metal

Now this was cool. It’s been forever since there was a proper Twisted Metal sequel and David Jaffe is directing its first iteration on the PS3. This was a reveal that Sony needed to incite some excitement into their presser. The game was shown off online and it looked like it’ll be a blast to play. The new mode ‘Nuke’ wasn’t as awesome as it sounds, but still looked like a neat take on the CTF gameplay mode. Overall, I’d have to say I was most excited to see something about this game, it looked great.

 Playstation Move

Playstation Move

Like Microsoft before them, Sony spent around half of their time talking about Move. It was actually a pretty decent showing. Move appears to work a lot better than Wii and seems to infuse some of the tech of Kinect into itself as well. However, both Wands and the EyeToy will run you about 140 dollars.

Games shown off like Heroes on the Move, Tiger Woods, and Sorcery all looked neat and they all had individual demonstrations of what the hardware is capable of. Between Microsoft and Sony, it certainly appears that Sony has a better software lineup for Move's launch on September 2nd.

B

Honestly, I wish I could say more, but I can't. This press conference left my brain mushy and stale. They didn't really wow you with anything and really tried to brag about how they were on the rise. Move looked impressive, but the other software shown just failed to disappoint. This was compounded by the fact that this lasted half an hour longer than the other two conferences and I just wanted it to end. It wasn't much worse than Microsoft's, but  I have no problem saying that it was the most boring one of this year's E3.
